Werder are not particularly satisfied with their performance in the first test game against Bursaspor. They may not have given up the game-deciding goal until the 85th minute, but their own expectations were not met despite a heavy workload in training. "That was not a very good match. You really have to look at it critically. There was not enough pleasure and joy to be playing to create many goal chances," said manager Klaus Allofs.

"We have to demand more from ourselves. Despite everything else, we wanted to be successful here. But we couldn't get it done because we did quite a few things wrong. We were too reserved and gave the opponents too much space. Altogether we reacted too much and just watched. We needed to give more of ourselves to win more flow of the game. The Turks were visibly more energetic because they are in the middle of their season. But we still should have done things differently," said a disappointed head coach Thomas Schaaf.

The Werder players did not have to be told about their poor showing. They were disappointed themselves: "You could see that we need time to get back into things," admitted Tim Wiese, who did not, however, want to overdramatize the result. "The loss really doesn't worry me too much. We have often lost and then put together a good stretch of results."
