Alexandros Tziolis from Panathinaikos Athens has transferred to Werder! Club manager Klaus Allofs announced the completion of the transfer Thursday night as the 10-time Greek international comes to Bremen on loan until the end of the season from the Greek record champions. Werder then holds a buyout option for the defensive midfielder. Tziolis will wear No. 16 for Werder. And already on Friday Tziolis and Klaus Allofs will travel to the team's training camp in Belek, where the other Werder players arrived on Thursday.
Tziolis arrived in Bremen Wednesday evening and on Thursday underwent the sports medical check-up and later discussed the final questions and formalities at the Weser Stadion. "As expected, we were able to clear up all the final points. We are happy that he now truly has arrived and can start training on Friday," said Allofs.
The 23-year-old Tziolis is fully confident heading into his challenge in Germany. "For me, this is a dream come true. The Bundesliga has many big teams, great players and excellent stadiums. And I will play for one of the best teams. Now I want to climb up the standings with Werder and have success," said the 1.89m midfielder.
Tziolis began his career with Greek amateur club Apollonas Litoxorou and transferred in the summer 2003 to the established side Panionios Athens. In 2005, he made the big jump to the Greek record champions Panathinaikos, where he developed into a national team player. He made his debut in Greek dress on 21 January 2006 for the former Bremen coach Otto Rehhagel. And Tziolis has since earned 10 caps. One of those came in Greece's 2-1 loss in the Euro2008 against eventual champions Spain. The midfielder speaks fluent German because he lived with his parents in Stuttgart until he was 9 years old.
