They imagined the winter break differently a couple of weeks ago. But injuries kept Werder's Austrians from testing the odd ski hill back in the homeland. Helping get over having to stay off the slopes was the excitement of working themselves into the team as quick as possible. And even though the healing processes for their injuries are not going as well as hoped, both are confident at the start of Werder's new year.
Sebastian Prödl was somewhat stuffed-up as he exited his VW Touareg. "Unfortunately I got hit by the flu bug over the weekend. But I want to see if can't practice a bit," gasped the Austrian, who had set his sights clearly on participating in the team's training camp. But that will not happen as team doctor Dr. Dimanski vetoed such a move. Still, the Austrian national team player is not entirely unsatisfied. "Actually I am on the right track. On Friday I had a light run and did not have any pain. I still have problems though with short, quick movements. That's why I will first go through an individual rehab program," Prödl said.
Martin Harnik will also not be travelling to the training camp with his team-mates. The Euro2008 participant is still fighting with a bone oedema he suffered in the fall. "Before the Christmas break I was nearly able to get back to the team training. But everything now has been pushed back. The oedema is not entirely gone and I don't want to overdo anything. I am making improvements. I ran today but a complete lactate test would have been too early," said Harnik, who will be working out with the team's fitness trainer Jens Beulke.
