Werder Bremen’s international campaign in 2009 will get underway with a mighty task. The Green-Whites pulled an extremely interesting opponent in the next round of the UEFA Cup. Trainer Thomas Schaaf’s men will take on AC Milan in the round of the last 32 teams.
The first leg against the Italian giants will be played on February 18th/19th, 2009 at the Weser Stadium, with the return leg to take place in Milan on Thursday, 26.02.2009. Should Werder progress through to the round of the last 16, they will face the winners of the clash between Olympiakos Piraeus and AS St. Etienne. The games in the round of the last 16 teams will be played on Thursday, 12.03.2009 (first leg) and Thursday, 19.03.2009 (return leg).
Manager Thomas Schaaf commented: “That’s not the worst draw we could have gotten. You’d hardly notice that we’ve been eliminated from the Champions League. I don’t there is much that needs to be said about the team, their players and their strengths. We know the city too from previous Champions League group clashes and other meetings. I can well remember some of the games I played there during the eighties and early nineties. Our goal has to be to prove more successful than we did back then. We are not going to start thinking about possible opponents in the next round right now, our full concentration has to be on the task at hand.”
