There are some top names awaiting a possible clash with Werder in the next round of the UEFA Cup. Yesterday evening, teams such as AC Milan, Ajax Amsterdam, FC Valencia and Deportivo La Coruna all finished their respective UEFA Cup groups in second place and will now go on to fill a place in the pot of possible opponents for Werder Bremen in the round of the last 32 teams. Those are just four of eight possible candidates for the Green-Whites to face though.
17 time Italian champions AC Milan could only manage a 2-2 draw at home in the Giuseppe-Meazza-Stadium against VfL Wolfsburg yesterday evening. The share of the spoils means the Italians finish behind the ‘Wolves’ in their group.
Ajax Amsterdam also played out a 2-2 draw against Slavia Prague on Wednesday evening and subsequently finished their group in second place behind Hamburg SV. Ajax Amsterdam remain all time record holders in Holland with a total of 29 Ehrendivision titles to their credit.
Further interesting ties for Werder could be against FC Valencia or Deportivo La Coruna. In the 2000/2001 season, Valencia reached the final of the UEFA Champions League, but lost 5:4 on penalties to FC Bayern Munich. In 2004, Deportivo made the Champions League semi-finals but drew the short straw against FC Porto.
Four further possible opponents for Werder Bremen will book their place in the next round of the UEFA Cup this evening. The draw for the last 32, and last 16, will be made on Friday, 19.12.2008 at 1pm in Nyon, Switzerland.
