For Werder Bremen’s Diego and Claudio Pizarro, who both incurred lengthy suspensions after the Bundesliga clash with Karlsruhe SC, there will also be financial repercussions. As general manager Klaus Allofs confirmed on Wednesday, both players will be fined for their actions: “They two players harmed themselves and also Werder Bremen. They will both be out for long periods because of their unsportsmanlike conduct and that is a set-back for the whole team. That sort of ill-discipline is something that we do not tolerate,” explained Allofs, who is yet to decide on the extent of the fine.

Close to the end of the Bundesliga clash with Karlsruhe SC, unnoticed at the time by the referee, Diego grabbed KSC’s Christian Eichner around the neck. The DFB supervisory committee later investigated the incident using television footage from the game and subsequently charged the Brazilian. The resulting suspensions means that Werder’s number 10 will miss out on the Green-White’s Bundesliga matches in 2009 against Arminia Bielefeld, Schalke 04 and Borussia Monchengladbach. Diego will not be available for selection in the league until the 21st match day (20. – 22.02.2008), against FC Energie Cottbus.

Following a challenge, Claudio Pizarro shoved away his marker from KSC, Martin Stoll, pushing him in the face in doing so. The incident was evaluated as unsportsmanlike conduct following provocation. The Peruvian is suspended until, and including, the game against FC Schalke 04 (Sat. 07.02.2009). Both Diego and Claudio Pizarro will be eligible to participate in the DFB Cup game against Borussia Dortmund on Wednesday, 28.01.2009.
