“It’s the season to be jolly....” The Werder players have already begun their Christmas holidays and many have left Bremen to enjoy the festive season in their own, often unique, way: “I enjoy a very Christian Christmas with my family, a Christmas tree, presents and some wonderful food,” explained Werder captain Frank Baumann. Peter Niemeyer is planning on an equally tradition Yuletide: “I like to spend Christmas with my family. There we’ve got our presents under the tree and every year we have fondue in the evening,” glowed the 25 year old who is eagerly awaiting Christmas Eve.

For Sebastian Prödl, Christmas is “A very meaningful festival.” “Traditionally we decorate the tree together, have a good evening meal and then go to midnight mass in the church.” A visit to the church is not something on Christian Vanders Christmas schedule but in the Vander household, they enjoy the same programme every year: “We like to have a more relaxed Christmas and travel to visit our families in the Lower Rhein region. We eat turkey on Christmas Eve and then give presents to the children. That’s always enjoyable to be a part of.”

Head coach Thomas Schaaf won’t be spending the festive period in Bremen: “As so often in recent years, we’ll be travelling to the mountains. I’m going to have a try at skiing.” Tim Wiese is going to be having a very different kind of holiday season with his nearest and dearest: “We’re going to be in Dubai for Christmas. We always go there in summer and winter. There you don’t really notice Christmas so much but we will celebrate and have presents for the children,” explained the German international.
