As Mesut Özil headed off for a well deserved Christmas break, he had his goals for 2009 clearly mapped out. After a very successful first year for him as a Green-White, the youngster is hoping to take the next step in the New Year. The focal points on his personal wish list are ‘Werder, the European Championships and the national team’. “And in exactly that order! The first year at Werder went fantastically. At the beginning it was difficult for me because I didn’t know anybody, but now I feel right at home. I’ve got the support of the team, the trainer and the fans and I wish to thank them for that on the pitch - next year I want to confirm that support, whilst becoming more consistent and more of a threat in front of goal.”
It is very clear to the midfielder that all of his targets for 2009 are only achievable through his performances for Bremen: “Werder is very much in the forefront for me. All of my concentration is channelled on that, the rest will come on its own.” For the young left-footer “the rest” means his international ambitions – the UEFA Cup with Werder and the U21 European Championships with Germany in Sweden.
Mesut Özil is hopeful that his performances will aide him on his way to making the breakthrough into the A-national team from one of his possible home countries. It is only a matter of time now before Mesut Özil will have to make the decision: Germany or Turkey? “I have had a telephone conversation with the German national team trainer – which is something I was very happy about. What we actually spoke about is something that will remain between us,” said Özil, who is still very modest despite the euphoria around his person: “One shouldn’t attempt to take the second step before the first. Firstly I want to permanently prove myself for Werder, after that we’ll see if I get a call up and at that point I will make a binding decision.”
