Two wins to close the first half of the season, a well earned break within touching distance and a joyous atmosphere in the Weser Stadium didn’t cloud the Werder view. On Saturday, all those asked to comment on the first half of the season were very insightful: “I wouldn’t necessarily speak of a conciliatory close to the season just because of the last two wins. We didn’t achieve the goals we had set for ourselves at the beginning of the season. I am not going to allow myself be blinded to that now,” remarked a less than totally satisfied Torsten Frings, and his opinion was very similar to that of his coach.

Thomas Schaaf made his feelings very clear: “We can’t make up for everything that has gone wrong in just two games. We’ve dropped simply too many points for that to be the case. It’s been something of an emotional rollercoaster ride. We didn’t expect so many ups and downs at the beginning of the season and that is something that we must put a stop to.” The two wins were a positive signal from the team in the opinion of the trainer, who after the final whistle was in great demand from the jubilant fans: “It was quite ok to see the willingness of the team to make some changes. Considering the work we have ahead of us, we can now go into the winter break with a very positive feeling.”

Exactly where they will have to get to work at the beginning of the New Year is something that those in charge at Werder Bremen have long since decided: “Our biggest problem is the fluctuation in our performances. We need to put a stop to following up every good performance with a disastrous one. We feel that we have noted the reasons for our problems and we will need to set about things more consistently in the future. There will not be totally radical changes,” explained general manager Klaus Allofs.
