‘Christmas Tree’ jerseys, season’s greetings for the spectators – it’s that time of year again with the Green-Whites, and at 5:21pm on Saturday, in keeping with the wonderful atmosphere, Werder also presented themselves three very welcome points. The players were very happy to have reaped the rewards for their valid efforts. After the final whistle, German international Torsten Frings commented: “That was a really tough game. We have often had problems dealing with Wolfsburg and their very compact style of play but today the game flowed almost in just one direction. We didn’t allow conceding the early goal to knock us out of our stride. It was a good thing that we made it 1-1 when we did.”
The vital equaliser was a Mesut Özil / Per Mertesacker co-production. The 20 year old swung in a free-kick and the lofty German international flicked the ball goal-wards so gently that there were later discussions as to who actually scored the goal: ‘Merte’ settled the confusion: “I definitely made slight contact with the ball and flicked it past the keeper. It was such a close call that I’m just happy I didn’t have the time to go to the hairdressers. I wanted to go before the winter break but I then decided to postpone for an extra week. It’s just as well, I needed every extra millimetre for that one.”
Coach Thomas Schaaf was also satisfied with the performance: “That wasn’t just a win born of hard work, there were periods when we passed the ball around very well. Unfortunately our finishing wasn’t so impressive. We could and should have scored a third goal, which really would have settled us. Towards the end they forced us well back but maybe we were just running on empty after the game on Tuesday.”
