Werder have now secured themselves a place in the UEFA Cup, and following the ups and downs of the first half of the season, the Green-Whites are now looking to end the year in the Bundesliga on a high. On Saturday, 13.12.2008 (kick-off 3:30pm), VfL Wolfsburg will be the guests in the Weser Stadium for the last match in 2008. The intentions for the final match day of the year have been clearly defined: “By securing our progression to the UEFA Cup, we have achieved a small target. Now we want to continue that success in the Bundesliga and go into the winter break with a good feeling,” stated German international Per Mertesacker.
The basis for that good feeling is taking all three points against Wolfsburg, but the ‘Wolves’, who are currently in sixth place in the table, have proven extremely hungry so far this season and will not allow the three available points to be snapped away from them too easily: “They have performed very well so far this season and they will come here full of self confidence. Wolfsburg have a good team and can make life difficult for any opponent. They are very mobile, very compact and play brave, attacking football,” warned Werder coach Thomas Schaaf.
The Werder trainer will have to make do without Diego, Claudio Pizarro (both suspended), Hugo Almeida and Martin Harnik (through injury) as well as Boubacar Sanogo (ill) against VfL. The question remains as to who will join Markus Rosenberg in attack. At the moment the best options are with either Aaron Hunt or Said Husejinovic. “We don’t have a lot to choose from but that’s just how it is sometimes. We have always been able to deal with that and put a good side together,” said a confident Schaaf, and he continued: “It’s the final pre-Christmas party for us, we have a home game and we want to give our fans something to cheer about. We will need to bundle all of our power and concentration on more time this year.”
