The Green-Whites rollercoaster ride has been almost indescribable. Five goals in Munich, five goals against Hoffenheim and against Berlin – but on almost every occasion there followed a stomach churning dip in form, such as last weekend against Karlsruhe SC. On Tuesday evening there was another dramatic high as Werder beat on Italian champions Inter Milan. And now that the Green-Whites are back up top, the plan is to stay there for as long as possible.
“We played very well today, we were able to tank up on some self-confidence and this time we can’t let it happen that we immediately begin to perform poorly again. I hope we are able to maintain our form against VfL Wolfsburg on Saturday. If we play then the way we played tonight, we will take all three points,” remarked striker Claudio Pizarro, who will miss out this weekend through suspension.
Trainer Thomas Schaaf is also demanding consistency from his men: “It would appear as though we assert ourselves better against strong teams. We need to prove that in every game, even if that means every three days.” Mesut Özil, who impressed once again on Tuesday, is of a similar opinion: “None of us are robots, we all make mistakes. It’s okay to make some mistakes, but we need to drastically reduce the number that we make.” The whole team are determined to get the ball rolling in that direction against Wolfsburg on Saturday.
