This win was sooooo important to Werder! “We were absolutely determined to win one game in the group stage – that was our biggest goal for today. The team really deserved to be successful. You can genuinely congratulate the lads on their performance today,” said Thomas Schaaf after the final whistle at the official post match press conference, and he was delighted about the reward for their effort – survival in European competition.
“We will go on now to play in the UEFA Cup and hope to achieve better results on the European stage next season,” explained Schaaf. Werder’s vice-captain Torsten Frings was both reserved but also hopeful in his comments after the game: “We disappointed in the Champions League this year but, with a bit of luck, in the end we made the best of a bad situation. In spite of everything, I am happy that we will continue to play internationally next year.”
General manager Klaus Allofs was decidedly more up front as he looked to the tasks ahead: “The win doesn’t make everything alright again. We have no reason to begin dreaming now! We want to win every game. That could mean winning the UEFA Cup, progressing in the DFB Cup and catching up on the leaders in the Bundesliga. We will have the chance to do that too, but we have a lot of work ahead of us. The new situation offers added motivation for the players, the staff and the fans.”
