There has hardly been a friendlier greeting between two opposing trainers in this season’s Champions League campaign as when Werder Bremen coach Thomas Schaaf and Inter Milan trainer Josè Mourinho passed the baton for their respective pre-match press conferences at the athletics hall in the Weser Stadium. The two trainers exchanged a genuinely warm embrace and briefly had time to exchange a few words before heading off to undertake their respective task: “We are good friends. I have a lot of respect for the work done by Thomas Schaaf and Klaus Allofs. I really hope they will be involved again internationally next year too,” said Mourinho.
After some mutual back slapping, Thomas Schaaf left the scene, but in his head his thoughts had already switched back to his own team, from whom he expects to see a reaction following the events that took place in Karlsruhe last Saturday: “Aside from just the result it is, above all, vital that the team shows they wish to make some changes.”
The current personnel situation certainly doesn’t make achieving that goal any easier. In addition to Diego, who misses out on the tie due to a yellow card induced suspension, Schaaf will have to make do without further important individuals: “An extensive examination has confirmed what we had feared with Hugo Almeida. He has a partially fractured vertebra appendage. Hugo will definitely not be available for the clash with Wolfsburg at the weekend and we expect him to be out of action for several weeks. To add to that, Naldo has a foot problem and will not be fit enough to play. Frank Baumann is also doubtful,” explained Thomas Schaaf, who considers the personnel situation to be so serious that he called Daniel Jensen into the team quarters. The Dane has been out for several weeks with an Achilles injury and only returned to full team training on Monday.
