The team with two faces showed their more lethargic side once again on Saturday. Following the gala performance and subsequent 5-0 win over Eintracht Frankfurt last weekend, there came a dour and despondent display by the Green-Whites. Captain Frank Baumann was very deliberate in his comments on an unacceptable performance: “With the exception of the first minute, we were far too lethargic throughout the first half and only slightly managed to improve that in the second period. It took us far too long to wake up. The really annoying thing for me is that it isn’t the first time that we’ve had problems following a good, or very good game. It’s clear now that this situation is no coincidence.”
And the captain’s comments could have come directly from trainer Thomas Schaaf: “I know that I’m repeating myself but today there were a whole collection of issues that we didn’t account for. We never really got into the game and we didn’t put up a fight. Maybe there are some people here who think things will just continue as they did after the game from last week but that doesn’t happen without the necessary bite and determination. Unfortunately we have two faces this season, we can put on top performances but also have terrible games.”
General manager Klaus Allofs was equally frustrated following the disappointing game in Karlsruhe: “We are displaying absolutely no consistency and need to acknowledge that that is something that we can’t correct by tomorrow. The trainer discussed all of these issues prior to the game but the fact that we lacked the disposition and the eagerness going into the game is unexplainable. A performance like that is incomprehensible! We can’t play like that if we want success.”
