In the penultimate game before the Bundesliga goes into its winter break, Werder Bremen lost 0-1 (0-0) away to Karlsruher SC. 29,373 spectators at the ‘Wildparkstadion’ saw the only goal of the game scored late on by Stefan Buck (83').

The two sides were very evenly matched throughout the first half and there were chances at either end for both teams to open the scoring. With just eighteen seconds on the clock, Claudio Pizarro had a wonderful chance to put the Green-Whites into an extremely early lead, but the Peruvian’s well placed effort bounced back into play off the inside of the post and was duly cleared (1’).

Karlsruhe proved they could give as good as they get and could have taken the lead themselves through Sebastian Freis (12’). The striker, with only Werder keeper Tim Wiese to beat, attempted a lobbed effort, which proved too heavy and cleared the bar. Seconds later the 23 year old was in again but this time Naldo was alert and could clear the danger. The next close call came at the other end when Naldo powerfully drove a free-kick just over the crossbar from all of 40 meters out (24’). Shortly after, Hugo Almeida had to pull out through injury and was replaced by Markus Rosenberg (34’). The Swedes introduction didn’t alter his side’s fortunes though and the teams headed into the break without a goal at either end.

For the second period, Werder coach Thomas Schaaf brought in Mesut Özil in place of Naldo, in a move to add an attacking alternative. The change didn’t have the anticipated effect and as the half progressed, it was the home side that looked the more likely to open the scoring. It took until the 65th minute before Schaaf’s side got a look in on the KSC goal but once again, Claudio Pizarro was to find his master in the far upright, albeit on this occasion from a tight angle.

Gaining in prowess, the Green-Whites began to capture more of the possession and looked determined to snatch away all three points, but KSC were not about to roll over. After Kapllani blew a good chance for the hosts (68’) and both Pizarro (71’) and Özil (72’) failed to take their chances, the home side struck! Following a corner, Stefan Buck deflected a shot of Timo Staffeldt unstoppably past Wiese to make it 1-0 for KSC (83’). Werder went despairingly in search of a late equaliser, but at the very latest when Pizarro was red carded in the 90th minute for violent conduct, it was clear that there was to be nothing in this one for Werder Bremen.
