On Friday afternoon, 18 Werder players headed off for the final away game in 2008, and the Green-Whites are looking to return to Bremen on Saturday evening with all three points in tow, following their clash with Karlsruhe SC.
One very welcome addition to the group was the returning Per Mertesacker, who was suffering with flu during the week. In the final kick-about prior to the Karlsruhe game, the lofty central defender displayed his determination and even scored a couple of goals: “Two goals, that’s a very good sign for Saturday,” commented Mertesacker, and Frings patted his colleague on the shoulder saying: “Merte you goal-getter, you should be in the starting eleven.” Whether or not trainer Thomas Schaaf agrees is an issue that remains undecided as yet.
The following 18 players took off towards Karlsruhe: Wiese, Vander – Boenisch, Naldo, Tosic, Baumann, Vranjes, Fritz, Rosenberg, Diego, Özil, Hunt, Prödl, Husejinovic, Frings, Almeida, Pizarro, Mertesacker.
