For the release of international players for the 2008 European Championships, Werder Bremen have been paid a total sum of €1,093,732 by UEFA, and top the list of European clubs. No other club on the continent had more representatives playing at the tournament that the Green-Whites. The runner-up places in this particular list went to Olympique Lyon, who received €1,039,115 and FC Bayern Munich, who picked up €1,018,109.
Notable is also the fact that Werder players played a larger portion of the tournament than all players from the host nation of Switzerland together. From their profits, UEFA made a total of €43,5 million available. That sum will be raised to €55 million at the 2012 championships. World football federation FIFA are looking to achieve similar figures at the 2010 World Cup in South Africa.
