Werder have three competitive games left between now and their richly deserved and hard earned winter break. As has become tradition, shortly before the end of the first half of the season, trainer Thomas Schaaf gathered his men for a test of their fitness levels.

In the absence of Per Mertesacker, Petri Pasanen, Torsten Frings and Daniel Jensen, the rest of the Green-Whites squad got busy on the training pitch. “Torsten has some slight muscular problems and will go through a reduced training programme over the next couple of days,” explained Schaaf, and he continued: “Per Mertesacker is ill, he has a sore throat. We’ll have to wait and see when he can train again.”

Whilst their ‘healthy’ colleagues continually increased the intensity during their laps of the training pitch, Daniel Jensen and Petri Pasanen went through an individual session. Jensen will most definitely not be available for the game at the weekend, but whether or not Pasanen will make the clash with Karlsruhe SC is something that Thomas Schaaf is unsure of as yet. Tim Wiese, despite having been out of action of late, was able to take the fitness test with his team mates: “We hope that he’ll be able to return to full team training this week and that he can play against KSC,” said Schaaf.
