“The ‘Beluga School for Life’ is the best assistance project that I have ever seen,” proclaimed Willi Lemke to a group for children, youths, their teachers, guardians and a number of guests in Thailand, who had gathered to see the Werder representative at the ampi-theatre on the local school grounds.
“I have taken an exact view of your homes and school and plan to write a very positive report for UN general secretary Ban Ki Moon,” added Werder’s supervisory board chairman as he opened a massive sport festival for Thai children and youths, which was to be carried out on the new football pitch, that could be built thanks to the generous support of Werder Bremen. 130 children and youths, as well as 70 adults were housed in the ‘School for Life’ project following the Tsunami disaster in 2004.
As the UN’s special ‘Consultant for Sport through Freedom and Development’, Werder’s supervisory board chairman is travelling around the world in search of development projects with real exemplary character, which offer children long term educational perspectives and use sport as an important element of development through peaceful means. “Sport can inspire democracy because it teaches fair behaviour,” commented the 62 year old.
Willi Lemke immediately captured the hearts of his young hosts with his open and endearing character. The Werder man’s two day visit was filled with laughter and beaming eyes – and not just because the lucky children were each presented with a new football: “Straight from the Werder changing rooms.”
