The target set for the final international trip in 2008 is absolutely clear – return with the goods! “If we don’t take something from this game we can wave goodbye to the Champions League. If we get nothing we’re out,” explained Werder coach Thomas Schaaf of Tuesday morning and in doing so he needed few words to make the enormity of the task at hand absolutely clear to his men. The coach went on to demand: “A performance similar to the one in Hamburg – only better.”
Werder’s vice-captain Torsten Frings sees the situation ahead of the vital clash so: “Famagusta are second and we are fourth. We have the opportunity to trade places with them tomorrow and that’s exactly what we plan to do. It’s time we began to display the potential that we possess.” The midfield powerhouse then went a step further: “Maybe it’s exactly the kind of game that could be good for us. There isn’t much for us to think about, we just need to go out with no holds barred, score goals and do all that we possibly can to try and win the game.”
Thomas Schaaf is expecting the opposition to put on an impressive performance too though: “They will sit back deep and then hit quickly on the break, the way they did in the first game in Bremen. The difference to that game is that Famagusta will be more confident this time and they will have their own fans behind them. That’s something that we’ll have to deal with. We’ve played in so many different stadiums at this stage that the euphoria there won’t shock us,” concluded the trainer.
