In a demonstrative gesture, the beaming Tim Wiese and Ivica Olic exchanged jerseys at the end of the game in front of the cameras. It was the continuation of a whole collection of moves made before the northern derby in order to defuse any possible flare points. “Rivalry yes, violence no” was the motto of the game, which was fully supported by both clubs and also the fans on Sunday in Hamburg - with just one exception!

“The atmosphere was good, calmer than you might have expected,” acknowledged Tim Wiese, who in spite of the defeat had the character to find some praise for Ivica Olic’s stunning match winner: “He hit that shot magnificently. I’m quite sure that he will be in the running for goal of the year with that one.” And the HSV striker was happy to return the fair gesture: “That wasn’t a goal against Tim Wiese, it was a goal against Werder Bremen and I am particularly happy about it because it brought us all three points.”

The example set by the two opposing players, who hit the headlines after an ugly clash during the last meeting of the two clubs, was mirrored by both groups of fans, who fervently supported their respective teams with wonderful choreographed displays. The northern derby did hit the headlines again for the wrong reason though following an incident after Werder scored the equaliser. As the players gathered in celebration, suddenly Frank Baumann dropped to the ground: “I was hit in the temple by something but I really can’t say exactly what it was. In the moment that it hit me I didn’t really think about searching for what it was.”

Following a brief interruption, the game could get underway again with the Werder captain back on the pitch: “It was painful but it didn’t affect me so badly that I considered going off,” explained the 33 year old. Vice captain Torsten Frings commented: “That was just one moron who doesn’t belong in a football stadium. Something like that just shouldn’t happen but you can’t blame HSV for it either.”
