On the fourteenth match day of the season, Werder Bremen lost the northern German derby against Hamburg SV, who are still unbeaten at home in the Bundesliga. The home side took the lead early on through Paolo Guerrero (6') but the Green-Whites were back on level terms before the half time break (24'). In the 74th minute, Ivica Olic decided the game in the home sides favour.

Another capacity crowd at the HSH Nordbank Arena saw the hosts take the lead after just six minutes. Tim Wiese was only able to parry a free-kick, swung in from the right by Mladen Petric, and Paolo Guerrero reacted quickest to slot the loose ball inside the near post - 1-0. As the, at times scattered, tie wore on, the Green-Whites began to find their feet and in the 24th minute they were back on level terms. Diego stepped up to take a free-kick from a central position, after a foul on the Brazilian playmaker, and curled the ball unstoppably into the top right corner, despite the best efforts of HSV keeper Frank Rost.

After the re-start there was again little quality football on the pitch and the eagerly awaited northern derby lived on the tension of the tie alone for long periods. That was until the 74th minute, when Ivica Olic took on a pass on the right, jinked inside and drove the ball with his left boot into the top left hand corner of the net - a stunning strike! Werder gave their all in the closing phase to again try and find an equaliser but the score was to remain 1-2 from the Green-Whites view point. In the Bundesliga table, trainer Thomas Schaaf's men remain in ninth spot, whilst HSV climb into fifth place.
