The final pre-match training session for the Werder players on Saturday, ahead of the northern derby clash with Hamburg SV, took place in some rather unusual conditions. Due to the sudden onset of winter, the Green-Whites were forced to train on a snow covered pitch: “Unfortunately, we don’t have any influence over the weather,” explained trainer Thomas Schaaf and continued: “But tomorrow at the HSH Nordbank Arena we’ll be back playing on a lush green surface again.” And the Werder boss is very much looking forward to the clash in Hamburg with his side’s arch-rivals in the north of Germany.

For Claudio Pizarro, it will be the chance to meet up with fellow countryman and former understudy Paolo Guerrero: “I helped him a lot during our time together at Bayern Munich. He was very young back then and I was in a position to guide him along with my experience. I’m looking forward to seeing him again tomorrow. We are still regularly in contact,” admitted the Peruvian. The two strikers spent four years playing together at FC Bayern Munich.

For the prestigious northern German derby, Werder coach Thomas Schaaf has selected the following squad of players to make the trip to Hamburg: Wiese, Vander - Naldo, Mertesacker, Tosic, Husejinovic, Frings, Vranjes, Hunt, Pizarro, Rosenberg, Sanogo, Almeida, Diego, Prödl, Baumann, Niemeyer.
