On Sunday, November 23rd 2008, Werder Bremen will take on Hamburger SV in the

89th north German derby. Ahead of the prestigious tie at the HSH Nordbank Arena in Hamburg, WERDER.DE spoke to HSV sport director Dietmar Beiersdorfer, who was a Green-White himself between 1992 and 1996, when he made 64 appearances for Werder, winning the league title with the club in his first season and the DFB Cup in 1994. The HSV manager experienced twelve northern derby’s himself as a player and knows all there is to know about the biggest game in the north of Germany.

werder.de: Hello Mr. Beiersdorfer, as a player you spent some time at Werder Bremen. With that in mind, is this game something special for you or is the whole thing totally overshadowed by the derby character?

Dietmar Beiersdorfer: “The northern derby is always something special, and not just because I was also a Werder Bremen player during my active playing career. All of the supporters look forward to this tie. The fans are already fired up for the game and I’m looking forward to it too.”

Under the guidance of new trainer Martin Jol, HSV are playing more attacking football than we saw from them last season. Werder are also a very offensively minded side. Are you expecting to see a glut of goals on Sunday?

Beiersdorfer: “It’s difficult to make such prognosis ahead of the game. I think everyone is well aware of Werder’s attacking ability. Our team will have to try to remain very compact and prevent them from creating openings. At the same time, we want to play attacking football ourselves and make them work at the back.”

HSV are currently in fifth place in the table with 23 points, Werder are back in seventh spot on 20 points. How important is this game for both sides?

Beiersdorfer: “Of course it’s an important game for both teams. Recently we had the opportunity to take three points in Berlin. We failed to do that and so, we are now looking to make up for that with a win against Werder.”
