The players who were away on international duty are all back safely and by Friday at the latest, all are expected to be back in full team training: “All the lads who were away on international duty have returned unscathed,” said Werder coach Thomas Schaaf at the official pre-match press conference on Thursday.
Even Petri Pasanen, who was unable to join up with the Finnish national team due to eye problems, was back in training with the rest of his team mates by Thursday afternoon. On the down side, neither Clemens Fritz nor Sebastian Boenisch have fully recovered from injury as yet. “There is still a large question mark over the possible involvement of Clemens Fritz. He has trained well over the past few days but we will have to wait and see if he will be fit enough to play a part in the northern derby against Hamburg SV. He still has a few days to go though,” confirmed Schaaf.
The trainer did admit that he will have to make do without Sebastian Boenisch: “Sebastian will not be available to us on Sunday. He is going through a rehabilitation programme at the moment but he is not fit enough to take part,” said the coach.
