Werder keeper Tim Wiese would certainly have envisaged his debut for the German national team going quite differently. Despite putting on an impressive performance throughout the second half, when he was called on to perform some heroics more than once, Wiese, who was in the German side along with Green-Whites team mate Per Mertesacker, finished up on the receiving end of a 2-1 (1-0) defeat to England in the final international match day of the year.
In the 31st international between the two nations, the 74,000 strong crowd at the Olympic Stadium in Berlin saw little goal-mouth incident early on. The visitors had the bulk of the possession and often caused problems for local boy Arne Friedrich, down Germany’s right flank. In the 24th minute, Matthew Upson pounced on a loose ball in the box to put England 1-0 up – a score-line which remained going into the half time break. Soon after the hour mark, Bayer 04 Leverkusen’s Patrick Helmes capitalised on a mix up between central defender John Terry and substitute keeper Scott Carson to level the scores, but with six minutes to go, Terry popped up in the opposing penalty area to head home from a free-kick and hand England another prestigious win in Berlin.
