Win over Köln to mark “beginning of better times”

It wasn’t only Claudio Pizarro that landed in the back of the net on Sunday. Werder put the ball past Köln’s keeper Mondragon three times too.

It may only have been worth three points on paper, but Werder’s win over Köln saw the Green-Whites leap four places in the league table to seventh spot – a stop gap on the way back to the top according to those responsible in Bremen: “Following the game against Hertha, we did warn about resting on a satisfactory result too quickly, but I genuinely believe that today was the beginning of better times,” commented general manager Klaus Allofs, who pointed to the example of FC Bayern Munich: “They proved the point that a good run can land you right back in amongst the top places.” And Werder are headed in the right direction: “Counting the Hertha game, we’ve not been beaten in three games and picked up seven points,” noted Diego.

In the opinion of the Green-Whites, the fact that the next game is such a massive tie can only be considered an advantage – it’s the northern derby against Hamburg SV: “That is a very important game for us and one that we can win a lot in. There is absolutely no fear of anyone taking that game lightly. Everyone will be totally fired up as soon as they enter the stadium.” Klaus Allofs was supported in his opinion by Naldo, who is very much looking forward to the game: “If we can win next week against HSV, then we’re right back among the top teams.”

Things may not quite work out that quickly, considering the stunning consistency and the eight point advantage held by the top two, Bayer Leverkusen and Hoffenheim, but captain Frank Baumann has been doing his homework: “If we can manage to reduce the difference to one or two points over the last four games this year, then we can make up the deficit in Spring, following the winter preparations.”
