Despite the fact that Werder Bremen finally got to enjoy a week that wasn’t jam packed with games, the personnel situation at the club is tense to say the least and trainer Thomas Schaaf has limited options ahead of the Bundesliga clash with 1. FC Köln. By the end of the final pre-match training session on Saturday, it was clear to the Werder coach that he wouldn’t just be without Sebastian Boenisch (muscle sinew tear) but he would also have to compensate for the losses of both Christian Vander, through illness, and Petri Pasanen: “He has a problem with his eye and we will have to see whether or not he will be fit enough to play against Köln. Christian definitely won’t be available so Sebastian Mielitz will take his place in the squad.”
The Werder coaching staff have named the following 17 man squad for the game against 1. FC Köln – although Perti Pasanen could still be added as an eighteenth man: Wiese, Mielitz, Naldo, Mertesacker, Tosic, Husejinovic, Frings, Vranjes, Hunt, Pizarro, Rosenberg, Sanogo, Almeida, Diego, Prödl, Baumann, Niemeyer.
