A whole week of training for a competitive match is almost a totally new phenomenon for Werder Bremen, due to their so tightly packed schedule. But the Green-Whites Bundesliga clash with Köln has made that possible thanks to a week off from international ties and the fact that the game is to be played on Sunday. It was a welcome change from the usual fast paced and extremely intensive sessions that have become the norm. “We have invested a lot of work but we still have plenty to do, this week is far from over,” explained Schaaf, who is delighted about the results thus far: “This week has been very good for us. We had time to focus our attention on particular aspects of our game and have worked very intensively. I just hope that it helps us on Sunday against Köln,” commented the trainer.

Tactical movement, shooting and defending! All factors that have proven problematic in recent weeks headed the schedule on the Werder training plan this week. All along the directions of the coach could be clearly heard as he vehemently picked out individual mistakes and suggested solutions.

And the head coach’s total commitment to the cause could only be matched by that of his players! Everyone gave 100% throughout and had a word of encouragement for the colleagues around him – something that Thomas Schaaf also duly noted: “In particular when things are not quite working out for you, it’s important to have the verbal support of your team mates. Communication is a very important factor in football.”
