For many years now, Werder Bremen have been mixing it on the elite European stage with the big boys in football. Not just on the pitch, but also off it, the Green-Whites have been extremely committed and at the beginning of November, a whole new football project got underway. Along with the ‘Scort Foundation’ and top Swiss side FC Basel, Werder have joined a year long social programme in Kosovo.
The deputy youth manager Björn Schierenbeck and performance centre trainer Marco Grote have made their way to the county capital of Pristina, where they will join the coaches from FC Pristina in training children from Albania and Serbia, whilst at the same time schooling other youths as programme leaders: “It’s a very interesting project, which has been very well prepared and has been a lot of fun so far,” commented Björn Schierenbeck on his impressions from the past few days.
The target of the Kosovo-Project, which had previously been planned in great detail by the ‘Scort Foundation along with trainers from Werder Bremen and FC Basel, is to offer a chance to children and youths living in difficult circumstances through football. Proof once again that football is about more than just scoring goals and winning titles. The plan is to help with the reconciliation of different groups in Kosovo.”
