It’s a strange set of circumstances, Werder don’t have a week packed with games yet still all of their healthy players are in training and not away with their respective national teams - an unusual situation for manager Thomas Schaaf. Due to Champions League and DFB Cup commitments, midweek games have become the norm for the Green-Whites and when that’s not the case, there are more often than not international games on the schedule.
The result is that the Green-Whites have a complete week to get themselves ready for the up-coming Bundesliga clash with 1. FC Köln: “We intend to use the week to continue concentrating on the work to be done,” said Thomas Schaaf. With the exceptions of Daniel Jensen, Clemens Fritz and Martin Harnik, the coach has his full squad available to him. Whilst Clemens Fritz has already begun with some light training, Daniel Jensen flew to Munich to have treatment on his injured Achilles tendon from specialist Kurt Schweinberger.
“I have the feeling that it’s improving at the moment but I hope to speed up the process with the treatment in Munich. I’ll be back in Bremen again on Thursday afternoon and hope that it will be better by then. I don’t want to overdo things so I have no intention of even starting with some light jogging until I am completely without pain,” explained the Dane, who is as yet unsure as to exactly when he will be able to rejoin his team mates. “At the moment I can only think from day to day but I hope the treatment is successful and everything works out very quickly.”
