Werder Bremen will be without midfielder Mesut Özil for the next three Bundesliga games. The German U21 international was handed down the three match suspension by the German Football Federation (DFB) sport commission because of violent conduct against Bochum captain Thomas Zdebel, following a previous foul on the Werder winger. The ban means that Özil will not be available to play in this Sunday’s, 16.11.2008, clash with 1. FC Köln, for the northern derby against Hamburg a week later or for the home tie against Eintracht Frankfurt on Saturday, 29.11.2008. The suspension carries a blanket ban from all championship games and so, Özil will not be permitted to play for the reserves in the third division either. The club and player have accepted the penalty, which means the process can take immediate effect.
Following the announcement of the suspension, Mesut Özil commented: “I’ve got to learn from this situation for the future. It was a foul born of frustration. I can’t allow that sort of thing to happen. I had never previously been red carded. I am very sorry that I won’t be able to help the team in the coming weeks.”
Additionally, the DFB supervisory committee opened investigations into Claudio Pizarro. The Peruvian striker stands accused of unsportsmanlike conduct due to criticism made about the performance of the referee following the game against VfL Bochum.
Claudio Pizarro has been summoned by the DFB supervisory committee to explain his remarks. Subsequently the committee will make a decision on how they will proceed.
