The Olympia Stadium in Athens played host to the always emotionally fuelled local derby between Panathinaikos Athens and Olympiakos Piraeus at the weekend. Despite showing a positive trend in recent weeks and controlling long periods of the game, Werder’s Champions League group opponents could only manage a 0-0 draw. With nine games played in the current season, Olympiakos remain five points clear of Panathinaikos (fourth place). The most persistent challengers at the moment are PAOK Saloniki.
Inter Milan were kept waiting for quite some time at the weekend before they could finally claim a 1-0 win over Udinese Calcio. It wasn’t until the second minute of injury time that Julio Cruz headed the only goal of the game to seal the points for trainer José Mourinho’s side. Thanks to a slip up by local rivals AC Milan (1-1 in Lecce), Inter take over the top spot in the table for the time being.
The fans of Anorthosis Famagusta, who had made the trip to see their side play away to EN Paralimni, weren’t left waiting quite so long before they had reason to celebrate. Lukasz Sosin broke the ice in the 70th minute and Iraqi international Hawar Taher Zabari followed up with a brace to seal the points and a 3-0 win. The result means that Anorthosis remain in first place but have Omonia Nikosia nipping at their heels, just two points adrift of the title holders.
