Werder games of late have been similar to standard, ballroom dancing. There are steps backwards, on the spot and also forwards. The 0-3 home defeat to Panathinaikos Athens in the Champions League in mid-week was certainly a step backwards, which would make the 0-0 draw away to VfL Bocum in the Bundesliga a step forward again.
“The team showed a positive reaction after the Panathinaikos game. It was clear to see that the effort was being made and everyone was willing to work for his team mates. The only thing missing was a goal,” commented general manager Klaus Allofs after the match in Bochum, and he added: “Today was a good performance from us but not a great one. We have a lot of work ahead of us over the coming weeks.”
Vice-captain and pace-setter Torsten Frings also spoke positively about the performance of his team: “That was a small step forward today considering the five steps we took backwards on Tuesday. The only thing we could be criticised about today was not getting the goal. But when I think about Naldo’s shot against the crossbar and the penalty that wasn’t given for a foul on Pizarro in the first half, then you could say that the luck wasn’t on our side. We were very determined and shot on goal quite often. It might even have been a record number of shots on goal but it just wasn’t to be today.”
The lack of fortune that Werder had to deal with was no surprise to Klaus Allofs: “It’s typical of our current situation. When you are under fire from critics and don’t have the stability, then things don’t always go your way. We just didn’t get the necessary goal today to settle us. Had we had more luck of late we surely would have won the game today.”
