“Nazis out, Nazis out!,” echoed around the stadium and minutes after the final whistle, in spite of having experienced an emotional game, the fans from both teams were unified. The Bochum fans, who had remained in the stadium, joined in the chanting with all of the Werder supporters as eight right-wing extremists were removed from the terraces and marched across the pitch to the stadium cells.
Real Werder Bremen fans support their players on the pitch whether they are South American, European or African, regardless of the colour of their skin or their religious beliefs. The fact that all this occurred was down to the exemplary actions of the Werder fans. Shortly after the final whistle, it was noted that a small group of right wing extremists, who were positioned close to the standing places in the visitors block, had unravelled a banner with the slogan ‘Pro-Racism’. The banner had barely been unfolded before a wave of outrage and opposition ensued. The Green-White fateful cornered the small group and the fan representative, who had been following the proceedings, informed the police, who were quickly on the scene.
Just a few weeks ago, Werder Bremen had been honoured by the German Football Federation with the ‘Julius-Hirsch-Prize’ for their continuing campaign against racism in sport.
