On match day twelve of the season, Werder Bremen played out a 0-0 draw away to VfL Bochum. In front of a crowd of 27,237 at the ‘Ruhrstadion’, Werder controlled the tie but the visitors were unable to find a way through.
From the out-set the Green-Whites took charge and with just five minutes on the clock, Mesut Özil put a shot just wide of the right post. Just minutes later, the visitors felt they should have had a penalty when Bochum’s Christoph Dabrowski appeared to drag Claudio Pizarro back in the penalty area, but the referee showed no interest in the appeals.
Bremen continued to control the pace of the game, although genuine chances at either end proved both few and far between. Before the break, opportunities fell to Naldo in the 32nd minute, when he rose to head a corner delivery from Diego just over the crossbar, and at the other end, Marcin Miciel came close with an effort from distance (37’). Shortly before the break, Claudio Pizarro failed to find the target with a shot from 20 meters out and so, the sides went in at half time goalless.
There was much of the same after the re-start with Werder Bremen playing the more attacking football and actively seeking to open the scoring, whilst Bochum patiently awaited their chances to hit on the break. Werder captain Frank Baumann had the Green-White fateful out of their seats when he got on the end of a good through ball from Pizarro, but the defensive midfielder only managed to find the out-side netting (58’). Three minutes later, Naldo hammered a rocket of a free-kick against the crossbar from 25 meters out.
Following a shot on goal from Pizarro from 16 meters out (70’), which narrowly cleared the crossbar, and a stunning save from Tim Wiese, who denied Miciel from point blank range with a lightening reaction (76’), there was to only one further talking point in the game. Referee Deniz Aytekin spotted a frustrated, off the ball kick by Mesut Özil on Thomas Zdebel and sent the 20 year old for an early shower. In the end there was only to be one point for the visitors with the tie finishing 0-0.
