The bitter 0-3 Champions League defeat to Panathinaikos Athens is still surely eating away at the Werder players, but the time has now come for the disappointment to change to complete focus on the up-coming task. On Saturday, 08.11.2008 (kick-off 3:30pm), the Green-Whites will be hosted by VfL Bochum. At the ‘Rewirpowerstadion’, Werder will be looking to “return to winning ways,” according to head coach Thomas Schaaf.
Just how capable they are of doing that was made clear by the Green-Whites last weekend as they made light work of Hertha BSC Berlin and sent them packing with a 5-1 drubbing. The plan is to pick up where they left off in the Bundesliga and quickly put paid to the threat of another poor run of form: “We showed just what we can do against Hertha and that a quick goal can set you on the road to success as well as making the whole process seem a lot easier. We will need to achieve that sense of security again if we are to get another good result,” demanded Schaaf.
In order to see his plan carried out, Schaaf is relying on his team’s dedication. “We simply weren’t aggressive enough against Panathinaikos but we can’t afford to let that continue to play on our minds and cause us to be anxious on the pitch. In Bochum we will need to approach the challenge determinedly.”
The game in Bochum is a possible opportunity for Werder Bremen to perform some patch-up work on their recently dented self-confidence. Bochum are currently going through a difficult phase as they struggle in 15th place in the Bundesliga table and have had little reason to feel confident of late. VfL’s only win in this current season came on match day two when they beat Arminia Bielefeld 2-0.
