Werder Bremen’s honorary team captain Dieter Eilts is no longer coach of the German U21 national team. The German Football Federation (DFB) prematurely terminated the contract, which was initially valid until 30.06.2009, with the former Werder player as trainer of the national youth team.
The decision was made on Wednesday at the DFB headquarters in Frankfurt-am-Main following discussions between Eilts, DFB general secretary Wolfgang Niersbach, senior national team coach Joachim Löw, sport director Matthias Sammer and national team manager Oliver Bierhoff.
Dieter Eilts was active as a Green-White player until 2002 and in that time he made 390 Bundesliga appearances for the club and won 31 caps for his country. At the end of his active playing career, Eilts took over as trainer of the Werder U19 team before going on to take charge of the U19 national team and then the U21 selection. This year Eilts guided the U21’s to qualification for next year’s U21 European Championships in Sweden.
