The Werder players had no words to combat the hefty criticism laid down on them from those in charge at the club. Of course they were all extremely agitated by their own performances but some of the more audacious of them were prepared to face the question of the press - including German international Per Mertesacker.
“That was very disappointing tonight,” commented the defender: “You would get the impression at the moment that we are not pushing ourselves to the limit. We certainly can’t be satisfied with our mobility. We need to pull ourselves together now and work as a unit. Our consistency was always our greatest strength and that is something we need to recapture. For the game in Bochum we’ll need to have a team on the pitch that is not totally tarred by crisis and can play freely.”
Team captain Frank Baumann also took questions from the journalists but could find no explanation for the past 90 minutes: “I thought we were headed in the right direction following the Hertha game but maybe I just don’t know the team well enough. That was another step backwards. I don’t know why that happened tonight, I’m not a psychologist. There is no point in everyone looking for someone to blame. Everyone has to question his own performances and give his all.”
The theory that the goals which have been set by the club cannot be achieved with the current team is something that the captain seriously doubts: “If that was the case, we wouldn’t have achieved what we did in recent years. The quality of each individual is certainly there but the quality of a team is another issue. If we want to prove ourselves now, we need to start winning games.”
