The rumbling that Werder Bremen took in the second half on Tuesday night continued on after the final whistle. General manager Klaus Allofs struck some harsh tones when commenting on the performance of the Green-Whites: “I’ve seen many games that we have had difficulties in, but I cannot recall that we ever finished a match so defencelessly and without bottle. It’s the worst thing you can possibly accuse a professional sportsman of, but it’s something we need to speak about tonight.”

Allofs was particularly disappointed about the lack of real team determination from the eleven men on the pitch: “Everyone is too focused on himself and no one is there for his team mates. The potential is there, but quality is what you derive from that. We will need to work on our mistakes in the short term but in the mid to long term, we will seriously have to consider whether or not we have the correct combination needed to prove successful.”

Allofs went on: “We were always ridiculed when we continued to emphasise in past years that the Champions League is not self-evident and that it is not normal to simply qualify for the competition for five years in succession, but it would appear as though a number of people here are of that opinion. Maybe that’s the problem with our group, that too many take qualification as a given.”

Allofs considers the key to a quick an upward trend as lying with those actively involved on the pitch - and he made his points absolutely clear: “If the players don’t get a grip on the situation in the foreseeable future, then we will either have to scale down our expectations or we’ll have to part company with players. And we are not about to adjust our expectations.”
