Belief and determination can, according to the old phrase, move mountains. During tomorrow’s Champions League game, Werder Bremen won’t be faced with the task of moving any mountains, but they will need the right attitude and amount of will if they are to overcome Panathinaikos Athens and maintain their chance of progressing from the group stage of the competition.

“We’ve not lost any of our three games, but we haven’t won any of them either. You don’t progress in the Champions League like that. We need to notch up the points and that you need to do as early on as possible. We haven’t managed to achieve that just yet,” explained head-coach Thomas Schaaf ahead of the vital group clash with the Greek side.

“Panathinaikos are in the situation that they must win the game. Our situation is that we want to win to keep our chances of progressing to the next round alive. The important thing is that we have our progression in our own hands. The decisive factor tomorrow will be which side has the greater will to win,” stated Schaaf, and he continued: “Both teams attempted to successfully stamp their mark on the first game and it ended in a draw. Tomorrow the whole thing starts again from scratch.”

It would appear as though the win over Hertha BSC Berlin in the Bundesliga at the weekend came at exactly the right time: “The win against Hertha was a real boost to our self-confidence, after the difficult phase we went through in recent weeks, and we got to see just how we need to play if we are to be successful,” commented team captain Frank Baumann.

“We need to take the quality and the result from the Hertha game into this one. A win like that must raise the levels of confidence and before the game tomorrow, we should all try and recall just what we did to prove so successful on Saturday,” concluded team coach Thomas Schaaf.

The 19 man squad for the clash with Panathinaikos Athens is: Wiese, Vander – Boenisch, Pasanen, Naldo, Tosic, Baumann, Vranjes, Fritz, Rosenberg, Diego, Özil, Hunt, Prödl, Husejinovic, Sanogo, Almeida, Pizarro, Mertesacker
