On the eleventh match day of the season, Werder Bremen crushed Hertha BSC Berlin 5-1 (3-0). A crowd of 42,000 at the Weser Stadium saw the home side take the lead thanks to an own goal by Gojko Kacar (14’), before Diego (20’), Markus Rosenberg (42’) and Claudio Pizarro (60’) increased the deficit to four goals. Cicero managed to snatch a consolation for Hertha (68’) before Pizarro struck again to make the final score 5-1 (85’).

Right from the outset, Werder showed just how determined they were to claim all three points today – and they did so in style! From the beginning the game was confined to the Hertha half of the pitch and it took just 14 minutes before the home side had their noses in front. Following a corner from Diego, Berlin keeper Christopher Gäng somewhat unluckily punched the ball against the head of Kacar and the rebound landed in the back of the net.

Even having taken the lead, Werder continued to control the match and almost doubled their lead in the 19th minute. Torsten Frings played a wonderful through ball to Markus Rosenberg, whose effort just cleared the crossbar. A minute later though, the Green-White fateful were out of their seats again in jubilation. Mesut Özil beautifully lifted a chip to Diego, who trapped the ball on his chest and then, with his back to goal, stunningly lobbed over the keeper to make it 2-0.

Werder were now cruising, and although Per Mertesacker had to be alert to clear the danger from both Marko Pantelic and Andrej Voronin (38’), the home side were soon three up. Diego delivered a corner which Mertesacker nodded on to the perfectly position Rosenberg, who forced the ball over the line from close range to put Thomas Schaaf’s men 3-0 up going into the break (42’).

After the re-start Werder reduced the pace, which allowed the visitors more room to manoeuvre. It was during a period of Berlin pressure that the Green-Whites put the game well and truly beyond their guests. Diego profited from a horrible defensive error and fed Pizarro ,who from point blank range had no problem raising the lead to 4-0. In the 68th minute, Cicero did managed to snatch a consolation for Hertha but with five minutes to go, Claudio Pizarro stooped in with a header to make the final score 5-1 for Werder Bremen.
