At the official pre-match press conference on Thursday, Werder coach Thomas Schaaf commented: “I hope to have Claudio Pizarro, Diego and Tim Wiese back again for the game against Hertha BSC.” The coaches hopes were confirmed following the final pre-match training session when all three were given the green light for Saturday’s game: “So far as training is concerned, they did everything very well,” added Schaaf on the condition of his returning players: “We are very happy to have them back in the team.”
Per Mertesacker, who was forced out in the second half against Bayer Leverkusen on Tuesday with a hip injury, will also be available for the clash against Berlin. The news means that Werder will only now be left without Clemens Fritz, Hugo Almeida, Daniel Jensen, Peter Niemeyer and Martin Harnik. Whilst Almeida is laid up in bed with fever, the other four are all carrying knocks which are keeping them out.
Trainer Thomas Schaaf has nominated the following 18 man squad for the tie against Hertha BSC Berlin: Wiese, Vander – Boenisch, Pasanen, Naldo, Tosic, Baumann, Vranjes, Mertesacker, Rosenberg, Diego, Özil, Hunt, Prödl, Husejinovic, Sanogo, Frings, Pizarro
