The strained personnel situation at Werder would appear to be taking a turn for the better. Per Mertesacker, Diego, Torsten Frings and Claudio Pizarro all served up the complete training session on Tuesday afternoon: “We’re hoping to have Claudio, Diego and Per back with us on Saturday,” remarked trainer Thomas Schaaf, and he went on: “We also expect Torsten Frings to be available for the clash with Hertha.”
The return of goalkeeper Tim Wiese would also appear to be well and truly on the cards: “I have absolutely no problems at all now. Everything is going well and I’ll be able to play on Saturday,” explained the German international following the Tuesday session. Definite absentees this weekend will be Daniel Jensen and Hugo Almeida: “Hugo is laid up in bed with fever and he won’t be available for Saturday. We will also have to make do without Peter Niemeyer and Martin Harnik,” explained Schaaf.
There are still doubts over the possible involvement of Clemens Fritz this weekend and Sebastian Boenisch limped off the training pitch: “I took a whack to my left shin and am now going to have it x-rayed,” said the 21 year old. The exact extent of the damage is as yet unclear.
