There were no digressions made by Klaus Allofs: “I have no fear at all of the word ‘Crisis’. At the moment we quite simply have too few points for us to achieve the goals we set for ourselves before the beginning of the season. We are experiencing a trend in the wrong direction right now. There are passes being played that no one can understand, situations are developing which are not being sniffed out quickly enough and the disappointment amongst the players is clear for all to see. There are a lot of aspects missing from the team that people are used to seeing from us. I am just hoping that these things are only shallowly covered beneath the surface and that we can set them free again very soon.”
Burying those positive Green-White aspects began around the twentieth minute of Tuesday evenings clash with Leverkusen. Werder were most certainly in control early on: “We had very good passages at the beginning of each half. Leverkusen, who were beginning the third game in succession with the same starting eleven, are in confident form at the moment and we knew we would have to battle our way into the game. We managed to do so quite well in the beginning but we were unable to maintain that over 90 minutes and that’s why we are not among the top teams in the league.”
Not much worked out for last season’s runner-up on the night: “We made the mistake of allowing our opponents too much space to operate in once again. We were unable to permanently keep them occupied and force our way forward. The things that we did correctly at the start dwindled more and more as the game progressed. By the end there was no way back into the game for us. Leverkusen deserved to take the points here tonight,” admitted Werder’s head-coach Thomas Schaaf.
