Werder Bremen were left licking their wounds after a bitter 0-2 home defeat to Bayer 04 Leverkusen, which leaves the Green-Whites clearly trailing the leading group in the Bundesliga table. Arturo Vidal (71’) and Manuel Friedrich (80’) sealed the points in a deserved win for the visitors in front of a crowd of 40,000 at the Weser Stadium.
Werder started the game brightly and positively displayed their determination to achieve a positive result in this important mid-week game. Bayer keeper Rene Adler was twice called into action within the first three minutes to deal with shots from Torsten Frings and Hugo Almeida, but as the game progressed, the visitors began to take control of proceedings, forcing the Green-Whites to seek their fortune in counter attacks. Both defences were well drilled and there were to be no goals before the break.
After the re-start the home side once again began strongly, but Bayer Leverkusen quickly found their way back into the game, although initially without ever really threatening to score. All that was to change in the 71st minute though! Christian Vander could only clear a headed effort from Patrick Helmes as far as Arturo Vidal, who was perfectly placed to slot into the empty net and put the visitors in front. Ten minutes later Leverkusen struck again through Manuel Friedrich, who was on hand to drive the ball home after he collected a rebound from Stefan Kießlings shot off the post, to make it 2-0. With ten games played in the season, Werder find themselves back in tenth place in the table whilst Bayer Leverkusen, for the night at least, top the pile.
