The difficult personnel situation at Werder Bremen has certainly not improved ahead of the important clash with Bayer 04 Leverkusen on Tuesday, 28.10.2008 – in fact quite the opposite has occurred! At training on Monday morning, the Green-Whites were left without Clemens Fritz, who was in the starting eleven against Hannover 96 on Saturday.
“It’s not worth taking a risk on Clemens due to his muscular problems. The risk is simply too great that something more serious could result from forcing the issue and that he could end up out of action for a prolonged period,” explained trainer Thomas Schaaf at the pre-match press conference. “We are hopeful still that he will be fit to play again on Saturday.” Aside from Fritz, who signed a three year extension to his contract with the club on Saturday, the coach will be also without goalkeeper Tim Wiese, playmaker Diego and striker Claudio Pizarro, who are all suffering with muscular problems. In addition, Daniel Jensen has not recovered from his Achilles tendon injury and will not be available for the game.”
On a more positive note, Per Mertesacker will be back in the reckoning again. The German international sat out the last three Bundesliga games through suspension after he picked up a red card for a professional foul against Hoffenheim: “I’m delighted to be able to play again and get back into the swing of things as quickly as possible to help the team to collect some points.”
Head-coach Thomas Schaaf will have the following group of 17 players available for the home tie against Bayer 04 Leverkusen: Vander – Mielitz, Boenisch, Pasanen, Naldo, Tosic, Baumann, Vranjes, Mertesacker, Rosenberg, Özil, Hunt, Prödl, Husejinovic, Sanogo, Frings, Almeida.
