“The public discussion on my future with the German national team has gotten more and more out of hand. With that in mind I wish to make the following very clear: I was very disappointed following the two World Cup qualifiers against Russia and Wales. Those who know me know that I always give everything for my team. Hardly being able to do anything to assist my teams success was a new and difficult experience for me to deal with. Because of that I needed time to come to terms with the situation. I intend to continue fighting in order to win another chance.”
The midfield engine continued: “Throughout my whole career as a football player, I have never gotten anything for nothing and I have always been willing to take on any challenge that came my way. It is something really exceptional to have the opportunity to play for your country. I hope to continue doing so in the future, just as I had discussed with the national team coach following the European Championships. I have never demanded a place in the starting eleven and never will. I wish to convince Jogi Löw and his team with my performances in the future too.”
