On match day nine of the season, Werder Bremen played out a 1-1 (1-1) draw away to Hannover 96. In front of a sell-out 49,000 crowd at the AWD-Arena, Christian Schulz put the hosts ahead (9’) but Hugo Almeida was able to level for the visitors before the break (41’).
Throughout the first period, the Green-Whites had the bulk of the possession but Hannover 96 hit again and again on the break. The hosts then notched up and early lead to boost their confidence. Former Werder man Christian Schulz stole away from his marker at the near post to head home a Szabolcs Huszti corner and make it 1-0 for 96.
Werder saw the need to take some more risks and almost had an immediate answer to the Hannover lead, but Florian Fromlowitz was twice on hand within two minutes to deny first Markus Rosenberg and then Naldo (15’). The Green-Whites efforts, in an entertaining north German derby, were finally rewarded with an equaliser before half time. Jurica Vranjes played a wonderful through ball to Hugo Almeida and the Portuguese international picked his spot and curled the ball expertly around Fromlowitz to mark up his first goal of the season and put Werder back on level terms going into the break.
There was more tempo in the tie after the re-start and both sides were able to create openings. With just minutes of the second period played, Christian Vander had to be alert to stop a shot by Sergio Pinto. At the other end, Mesut Özil had a chance to put his side in front with a lob which the 96 keeper was equal to and Aaron Hunt twice had the goal at his mercy (59’/72’) but the German youth international failed to take either of his chances against an inspired Florian Fromlowitz in the Hannover goal. In the end Werder had to settle for a share of the spoils in an evenly matched 1-1 draw.
